-Providing free continuing education for Pre School children in ICSE School in 2010
-Providing free ICSE education to 100 rural children 2013-14

Beginning of Free education at Madhuvan
with Sri Sathya Sai Sisuvikas Bhavan Free Montessori Pre School for rural children

The Sisuvikas Bhavan at Madhuvanam (headquarters)  has been merged with the Kindergarten School for better monitoring and excellence. This has been done after studying the psychological aspects of the children later entering the common ICSE school. Now every year 15 children will be admitted to LKG along with other students from different strata of life. Thus a cosmopolitan atmosphere is created in the kindergarten. A voluntary Social Worker closely monitors the behavioural patterns of the children so as to bring them up in ideal conditions.

History of Sisuvikas Project

Sisuvikas Bhavan , the Centre for Development of rural children was the first project started in the parent Trust's  Project for Rural Development  named as  Sathya Sai Grama Kalyan Yojana. This centre was inaugurated in February 2000. Since the formation of, Madhuvan Sai Vidyashram Trust, a trust exclusively for educational programmes the Sisuvikas Bhavan is run by the latter.

The Cause for starting

The State Government runs centres called ANGANAWADIS in villages under the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS). The trust earmarked areas which are not covered by such centres. These backward areas needed patronage for child development. The opening of Sisuvikas Bhavan at Madhuvan was an answer to this problem initially.

As a Multi Grade Learning Centre upto 2007-08

Until  2007-08,the methodology followed at Sisuvikas was that of an MGLC, the Multi Grade Learning Centre. This is the system followed at all Government run ANGANAWADIs. Children belonging to 21/2 -51/2 years age group were admitted. The medium of instruction was their mother tongue Malayalam. The Syllabus was adopted from the scheme prescribed for Govt. Sponsored Anganawadi Child centres.

Sisuvikas as a Multigrade Learning Centre initially

From 2008 a  Montessori  Kindergarten
The educational initiative, Madhuvan Sai Vidyashram Trust took over the Sisuvikas project. From the academic year 2008-09, the curriculum has been radically reintegrated. The scheme of the ICDS was found inadequate for the following reasons:-
1. A Govt. sponsored "Anaganawadi" child centre had started in the year 2007-08 which duplicated the work which the Sisuvikas was doing. Since the trust's policy was not to duplicate any Governmental initiative but to complement, the scope for the current programme was lost.
2.The medium of instruction was only Malayalam. In fact the poor parents resorted to private tuitions etc to provide the children with English education. The local convent schools necessitated this and the poor partents had no other way than to teach them English paying fees.
3. The quality of English education they derived from such tuitions was low. The need for providing better education was felt.
4.Since the admission was not restricted to poor children only, many well-to-do parents found the Sisuvikas just as a day care  to keep their children when there are no tuition classes. The Trust took this matter very seriously.
New Syllabus
Now the Sisuvikas follows the ICSE syllabus. English primers from Oxford University Press are introduced for study.Malayalam and Hindi will also be taught.

Restriction on Admissions
The admission has been restricted to 15 students coming from deserving families. The applications received in response to the publicity given among villagers about the school, will be scrutinised  and a team shall visit their house to verify the need of our help. The following students are given preference:-
a. Children of widows.
b. Children of abandoned wives.
c. Children in the care of grand parents, where parents are in
    remote places for livelihood
d. Children of parents who spend most of their income for
treatment of elders in the family.
e. Children of parents who do not hold landed property more
than 10 cents in the rural area.
It is also to be seen that parents are free from alcoholic and narcotic indulgence.
Supplementary Food everyday

The children under Sisuvikas project are provided at school every day the following diet as supplementary food free of cost:-

12.30  PM.   Rice, Dhal, (pulses), Curd and Vegetable fry
03.00  PM    Milk with nutritious snack

Apart from this lactating mothers are provided with milk and nutritious food as and when siblings are born to children of Sisuvikas.

House Visit by Child Worker

The Child worker (trained Ayah) visits some houses of the children after the school closes at 3.30 PM. She is required to visit a mother at least once a month. This helps her to evaluate the circumstances  of the child at home and to report on the same to the committee for managing the Sisuvikas Bhavan.

Mothers Meet every month

The mothers are required to meet at the Sisuvikas Bhavan every second Saturday in the afternoon. The Trust arranges classes by experts on health and hygiene , nutrition, kitchen gardening, handicrafts , etc.
Monthly Medical Check up

The Pediatric consultant at Madhuvanam Medical Centre checks up children every month  and prescribes medication and nutritious additives which are supplied from the Madhuvanam Medical Centre free of cost. The parents also get free medical aid.

Balamela (Children's Festival)

A children's festival 'Balamela'  used to be organised towards the closure of the academic year. Now it has been decided to hold it during Kerala festival Onam week. This comprises not only of talents and sports competitions for the children but also the sports and cultural meet for mothers. One whole day programme is scheduled for the purpose and our volunteers have lunch with the mothers and children on that day. This provides a feeling of togetherness for them. The distribution of prices are made on the same day if some dignitary visits the sisuvikas or at a public function held for the purpose.

Satellite Sisuvikas Programme

The Sisuvikas Bhavan at Madhuvanam (headquarters)  has been merged with the Kindergarten School for better monitoring and excellence. This has been done after studying the psychological aspects of the children later entering the common ICSE school. Now every year 15 children will be admitted to LKG along with other students from different strata of life. Thus a cosmopolitan atmosphere is created in the kindergarten. A voluntary Social Worker closely monitors the behavioural patterns of the children so as to bring them up in ideal conditions.

The trust proposes to  set up  SISUVIKAS centres in surrounding hamlets also where free Montessori education can be imparted subject to availability of volunteers to teach.
